Pear Gruyère Grilled Cheese with Jalapeño Jam

A fresh and sophisticated take on on the beloved and timeless favorite: the grilled cheese. An added layer of sweetness from the pear, subtle spice from the jam and a nice nuttiness from the gouda that is super high flavor and really easy to create, not to mention delicious!

Why You'll Love This

  • An elevated twist on a classic — Still a grilled cheese at heart, but with real depth of flavor.

  • Sweet, spicy, and nutty in one bite — Pear, jalapeño jam, and Gruyère balance each other perfectly.

  • Quick and easy — Ready in about ten minutes, start to finish.

Key Ingredients

  • Pear — Adds natural sweetness and a soft, juicy texture against the melted cheese.

  • Jalapeño pepper jam — A subtle, sweet-spicy kick that keeps the sandwich from tasting too rich.

  • Gruyère — Nutty and deeply melty, it's the backbone of the sandwich's flavor.

  • White cheddar — Adds a sharp, tangy contrast to the Gruyère's nuttiness.

  • Butter — Key to getting that golden, crisp crust on the outside.

Pear Gruyère Grilled Cheese with Jalapeño Jam

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 5–6 minutes | Serves 1

Instructions:

  • 2–3 tablespoons butter

  • 2 slices of your desired bread

  • 1–2 tablespoons jalapeño pepper jam

  • 3–4 slices pear

  • 3 slices Gruyère

  • 2 slices white cheddar

Ingredients:

  • Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread. The buttered sides will be the outside of the sandwich.

  • Add the white cheddar to each slice of bread, making sure the buttered side is facing out.

  • Heat a small skillet over medium-low heat. Melt one tablespoon of butter and add the sandwich to the skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes on one side until golden, then flip and cook for another 2–3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden.

  • Remove both slices from the heat and layer with sliced pear and a smear of pepper jam. Close the sandwich, slice diagonally, and enjoy!

Tips for Success

  • Keep the heat at medium-low so the cheese has time to fully melt before the bread browns too much.

  • Use a firm, ripe pear rather than an overly soft one so the slices hold their shape inside the sandwich.

  • Press down gently with a spatula while cooking for even contact and more consistent melting.

  • Let the sandwich rest for a minute before slicing so the cheese sets slightly instead of oozing out everywhere.

  • Adjust the amount of jalapeño jam up or down to control the sweetness and heat to your liking.

Ways to Serve It

  1. For lunch or dinner — Simple and satisfying on its own.

  2. With a side — Pairs well with a green salad or a bowl of tomato soup.

  3. As an appetizer — Cut into smaller triangles for easy sharing.

  4. For an elevated snack — Serve alongside a glass of wine.

Storage

This is really meant to be made and eaten right away, while it's warm and the cheese is melted. The pear and cheese can be sliced ahead of time and stored separately in the fridge for quick assembly later.

Swaps and Substitutions

  • Gruyère: Swiss cheese makes a good substitute.

  • White cheddar: Sharp yellow cheddar works just as well.

  • Jalapeño jam: Any hot pepper jelly, or fig jam for less heat, can be used in its place.

  • Pear: Thinly sliced apple is a good swap.
